Beaver Falls History

David Zeisberger, a Moravian Church missionary who later moved to modern-day Lawrence County, first made reference to the region of Beaver Falls in his journals in 1770. Zeisberger was sent to the Beaver River valley by a Lenape leader named Pakanke, where the Lenape possessed a vast area of open ground that Zeisberger was permitted access to. Zeisberger and his men paddled down the Allegheny and Ohio rivers in 16 canoes in April 1770, arriving at the mouth of the Beaver three days later. They traveled up to a place known as the "Falls of the Beaver," where they set up camp.

Dr. Samuel and Milo Adams were among the earliest inhabitants near the upper falls, while David Hoopes and Isaac Wilson developed the middle falls. When the town was first established around the middle falls region, it was given the name Brighton in honor of the surveyors' homeland of Brighton, England.

Despite an early promise from the canal commerce on the falls, the town lagged behind nearby New Brighton due to persistently bad economic times. The previous owners sold the property to the Harmony Society in 1859. The Harmonists hired surveyors as soon as possible to redesign Brighton, doubling its size, paving several main streets with brick, and officially renaming the settlement Beaver Falls.

On November 9, 1868, the city was granted borough status as a result of its quick regeneration. Up to 225 Chinese people lived in Beaver Falls' Chinatown in the 1870s; they were sent there to work at the Beaver Falls Cutlery Company, which the Harmonists had established in the borough.
