Sewickley's History
The first recorded record of Sewickley, Pennsylvania, is from December 31, 1767, and the city has a history that begins in the middle of the eighteenth century. According to historian Charles A. Hanna, the words "Sewickley" and "town" are Creek words for raccoon and respectively (ukli). Hanna claims that before the Asswikale branch of the Shawnee migrated from what is now South Carolina to Pennsylvania, they most likely stole their name from the nearby Sawokli Muscogee.
In differing degrees, testimonies from the Sewickley Valley Historical Society today, the Sewickley Presbyterian Church, and renowned anthropologist Frederick Webb Hodge accord with Hanna's derivation. Sewickley is also thought by some locals to be a Native American word meaning "sweet water." Historians disagree whether the name refers to the town's location along the Ohio River or the natural springs found there.
The first settlers in Sewickley were Scottish-Irish immigrants who arrived in the mid-1700s. These early settlers built log cabins and farms, and the town slowly began to grow. In 1853, Sewickley was officially founded as a borough, and it has been steadily growing ever since.
Today, Sewickley is a thriving community with a rich history. The town is home to numerous shops, restaurants, and businesses, as well as several historical landmarks. Locals and visitors enjoy Sewickley's small-town charm, and the community is proud of its rich heritage.
